Product details
1835: The young zoologist Gus is sent by the Natural History Museum in Lille to Iceland to study the fauna of the North Atlantic. There, he witnesses a massacre of a colony of great auks, a penguin-like bird species. Gus manages to save one of the birds, unaware that he has just rescued the last specimen of its kind. He names it Prosp – and a deep friendship develops between the curious researcher and the initially distrustful animal. Gus gradually realizes that he may be witnessing something unique and unimaginable: the extinction of a species. What does it mean to love an animal that will never exist again? Gus develops an obsession with the fate of his feathered friend – an obsession that causes everything else to fall by the wayside.
