The lovely Helena grows up on the Scottish estate of her guardians, Uncle Sam and Uncle Sib, who not only share a snuffbox but also always complete each other's sentences. When Helena turns eighteen, the two decide to marry her off to the highly serious scholar Aristobulus Ursiclos, who appears to them as a guarantee for their niece's happiness. However, she requests some time to think: she has read in the newspaper about the green flash, a rare natural phenomenon that can only be observed at sunset over the sea on particularly clear days.
