Urs Widmer, born in 1938 in Basel, studied German, Romance languages, and history in Basel, Montpellier, and Paris. In 1966, he earned his doctorate with a dissertation on German post-war prose. He then worked as an editor at Walter Verlag in Olten and at Suhrkamp Verlag in Frankfurt. Urs Widmer lived and worked as a writer in Zurich. He was married and had a daughter. In 2007, Urs Widmer received the Friedrich Hölderlin Prize from the German city of Bad Homburg, and in 2013, he was awarded the Jakob Wassermann Prize. The author passed away in April 2014.
