With the outbreak of World War I, there was a shortage of small change coins, due to the fact that these were often made from valuable materials (gold, silver, etc.) that people wanted to hoard. To counter this shortage, countries, municipalities, cities, and companies issued emergency money. By 1923, an immense amount of such money was in circulation, prompting Dr. Arnold Keller – the author of the first catalogs on German emergency money – to create a classification that still serves as a reference today. Although there had been a slight inflation since the war, the devaluation of the Reichsmark accelerated further from 1922 onwards. In 1923, it continued to lose purchasing power, with nominal values skyrocketing during hyperinflation. To halt this downward spiral, emergency money was issued that was backed by a stable value, meaning it could not lose worth. This included gold or US dollars, as well as wood, forests, or rye. This book aims to present and catalog this stable-value emergency money for the first time. This fills another gap and allows the series on German emergency money to be further completed. This catalog is a must-have for any collector of German banknotes and interested laypersons.
