Peter Bichsel tells the story of Cherubin Hammer, who believes he is a writer. He presents a second Cherubin Hammer, a charmer who cannot be trusted yet is loved by everyone. What unites them is that they live their lives consistently and ruthlessly. As they journey through their stories, sometimes taking them to Rome's Pantheon, sometimes to Munich, and sometimes to the distant Aargau, the men grow old. One dies, while the other spends his days in a nursing home.
