Product details

"Mountains, Seas, and Giants" tells the encyclopedic and visionary story of human civilization shaped by war and environmental destruction, extending into the 27th century. The political world of the future, as envisioned by Döblin, is divided into two major totalitarian power blocs that are engaged in the "Ural War." The climax of the narrative is an expedition to Greenland aimed at opening up new settlement areas. Fire masses derived from Icelandic volcanoes cause the Greenland ice sheet to melt. However, beneath the ice, colossal primordial creatures emerge, awakening to threaten all of humanity. Only through biotechnologically created "Giants" can these monstrous primordial beings be held at bay. Among the survivors are groups of settlers who ultimately lead a peaceful life in harmony with nature, replacing the ruling technocracy.
