A murder that everyone commits

Louison Veik, the youngest daughter of District Court President Veik, is murdered and robbed of her precious jewellery. The search for the murderer remains fruitless and the case must be closed. They rest for seven years until the day when Conrad Castiletz marries the murdered woman's sister. He sees the image of the dead woman for the first time, and a deep and inexplicable affection for her overcomes him. Driven by a strange compulsion, he now tries to solve the crime, neglecting his wife and endangering his existence.
