Matrix™ is a highly porous biomedium that enables efficient biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste. Matrix™ is a porous inorganic solid with a diameter of approximately 10 mm. Each liter of Matrix™ provides as much surface area (> 700 m²) as 170 liters of plastic balls! Bio-plastic materials only offer an outer surface, while Matrix™ provides both an outer and an inner macroporous surface. These macropores are ideally sized for nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This allows Matrix™ to remove nitrate as well as ammonia and nitrite simultaneously and within the same filter, unlike other forms of biomedium.

Matrix™ is completely inert and will not break down. It does not need to be replaced. Since most bacteria reside inside the filter, Matrix™ can be rinsed if necessary without damaging the filter. Matrix™ is compatible with all types of wet or wet-dry filters.
