He based his work on the writings of the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius. Vitruvius described in his teachings that the navel is the center of the body and that a person with outstretched arms and legs forms both a square and a circle. Many artists created drawings based on Vitruvius's teachings, as Vitruvius himself did not produce any.
