Born in 1746, the painter Francisco de Goya made a name for himself early on as a portraitist. With his appointment as "First Court Painter," the Spanish artist attained a position that at the time represented the pinnacle in an artistic career. A serious illness, which resulted in subsequent deafness, caused the artist to change his perspective on the world, which was reflected in his works.

The painting "de Goya - The Sleep of Reason Gives Birth to Monsters" shows a motif from the Caprichos, a socially critical cycle of the painter, created in the years 1793 - 1799. The depiction was executed in the special aquatint "etching technique", which is still associated with the name de Goya.

The original hangs in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
