Unlike conventional cotton farming, the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers is prohibited. Manure and compost are used to maintain and improve natural soil fertility. This increases the humus content of the soil, allowing it to store more water and CO₂. Additionally, the susceptibility to erosion is reduced. Farmers must also adhere to crop rotation, meaning that cotton is grown alternately with other crops.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is a globally recognized quality label for the processing of textiles made from organically produced natural fibers. GOTS is considered a best-practice example and ensures the control of the entire textile chain. The standard covers the production, tailoring, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of all textiles that consist of at least 70% certified organic natural fibers. The GOTS logo may only be used if the entire supply and production chain is certified. There are strict guidelines regarding equipment and dyeing. Compliance with fundamental labor rights according to the core standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO) is monitored among processors and manufacturers. GOTS mandates the implementation of an environmental management system and wastewater treatment in the operation. Certain environmentally harmful chemicals are prohibited, and there are limits on residues in wastewater.
