Pentel was founded in 1946 as "The Japan Stationary Corporation" in war-torn Japan and initially concentrated on the production of watercolour and oil paints as well as drawing pencils for kindergartens and schools. The company's own research and development laboratory is responsible for numerous achievements in the world of writing and painting products. Examples include the first 0.9 mm fine lead for mechanical pencils, the first fibre-tip pen "SignPen", the first rollerball pen "Ball Pentel" and the first correction fluid with a writing tip instead of a brush.
