The original of this binding is attributed to Le Gascon, a legendary bookbinder of the 17th century. He is considered the inventor of the pointillé and fanfare styles, and his influence is evident throughout the later history of bookbinding. Although this binding is not by him but by another French master, it still reflects his style.
