For 15 years, from 1910 to 1924, Erich Mühsam, the most famous German anarchist, recorded his life - detailed, stylistically pointed, unsparing even towards himself - and never boring. What makes these diaries so captivating is the alert eye of the world changer. Mühsam wanted to try out anarchy in practice. For him, anarchy meant living without moral blinkers, without regard for conventions - and he proved that it works. His writing, too, is action; all his sentences resonate with the expectation of the upheaval he is actually helping to bring about: The Munich soviet revolution is also his, and the revenge of the Bavarian justice system hits him hard.
