Does it have to be attached with screws, or does tension also work. Don’t worry, not for stairs.

Must be fixed with screws.
You can do it with tension if you McGyver it with some wooden plates and some good ol’ Kabelbinder. Might not look pretty, but beats drilling into stone or a pretty wall. I can send you a pic if you like. @Galaxus: time to open up comments with pics?
