If the thing fails, are the disks still intact and can then be used elsewhere with the data?
If the unit itself shuts down, the hard drives are still usable. If you had configured the hard disks as a raid, you must have a suitable new raid controller to access the data again. Regardless, you could reformat the disks and use them as you wish. In that case, however, you would have a complete loss of data.
Not quite true, or the risk of loss depends on the RAID type. With JBOD and RAID 1, if the electronics of the enclosure fail, the data should be readable by any computer via the SATA connection. Even with RAID 0, there is probably a good chance of getting at the data if you use Ontrack EasyRecovery, for example. The only thing I don't know about is BIG, because this is probably a special solution. In the end, however, the case is not expensive, in fact dirt cheap compared to the hard drives and even more so to the data, and you will probably be able to buy it later if necessary (or a similar one with the same chip), should this very unlikely case occur. :)
