How long do these plates last? Do they possibly break down at the same time? Would it be worth replacing a plate with a new one after how long?

In use for 3 years in two NAS with 8 each. In one NAS (hardly used), a HD had to be replaced after one year (warranty). In the second NAS (in continuous operation with around 20 employees), a disk now seems to be giving up the ghost ... I deliberately bought an additional HD at that time, so I can react quickly, because I have already experienced that a NAS smokes out 2 HDs within a week (RAID 5) - that is a bit stupid ;-/. In the business, we make weekly backups and the whole thing is mirrored in the cloud - but we still use RAID 6 - then two HDs are "allowed" to smoke out ;-)

All electronics follow the bathtub curve of failures i.e. they will either fail in the early part of their life or last a long time before failure. If you are really concerned, then install the drive and run it for some weeks to ensure it does not fail early, a so called burn in.

Temperature plays a role too. The hotter the electronics, the shorter their life.

I also installed this drive into a Synology NAS, probably 5 years ago, to replace an much older 1 TB drive.  It, and all the other drives, held out well.  I have recently scrapped the NAS and am now using Cloud storage - and, with streaming subscriptions, no longer downloading and hoarding music and videos.  Simplify by having less!

I installed five of these drives exactly 5 years ago into my Synology NAS, and all five drives are still going strong! Best upgrade I ever made.
