Hello you smart communityists ;) I'm sitting here with a 1070 (not ti !) that powers a 1440p 144hz panel and wondering if it's worth the kilo of dough for a 2080.... I'm so "on the edge" in New English but would have to stretch my hand quite a bit to buy it. 1000 francs is not a small amount of money. Depending on the game, I notice that 1440p is not 1080p in terms of framerate. Current examples would be The witcher 3 and Total War Warhammer 2, both of which struggle to get >60 fps on high/ultra. Logically, I would prefer to get close to 144 to make use of my panel. What do you say? Wait, buy, and why? Need a grabber or someone to pull me back from the edge :) Background: I'm not interested in raytracing, I'm interested in the pure RTXoff performance, my CPU is a not yet overclocked i7 6700k.
In short: Yes.
If you only play small indie games or esport titles (dota/lol/csgo/overwatch/hearthstone etc), where you can easily hit 144hz with your 1070, then no. For mostly complex RPGs or shooters or generally graphically demanding games like Witcher 3 or Battlefield V, you can already see that the 1070 can't handle 1440p. With the 2080, you could expect 120+ FPS on High/Ultra. Without ray tracing.
It's best to think about exactly what games you like to play, and then look at the respective benchmarks and compare directly how the 2080 performs against the 1070 or even against a 2070. In my opinion, it could be worth it, but that depends mainly on your budget, because the RTXs are really expensive.
Addendum: My 2080 is waiting for me at home according to the SMS from the post :) I'll write a review - today's article on compubase about the new driver and patch makes me even more positive that at least the campaign is playable even DXR *joy* - DXR doesn't really interest me - but if I can turn it on, then you can have a look at it, so far I've lived without it and if I want frames I can turn it off again :) - Test follows!
Hey thanks for the detailed answer, I'm really looking for other points of view at the moment as I'm really 50 50 at the moment and can only argue myself healthy or mad with lies :-)
So with Overwatch I can't get over 120 frames on max, but I haven't played it for over a year, maybe there was a patch that improved the framerate? (Thanks for mentioning it, instead of buying a new shooter I can turn it on again :). ). Now and then I play more classic titles like Wasteland 2, BaldursGate remakes (or newer ones like Pathfinder) and sometimes an adventure game. But I also play 50% or more "hungry" games like the notorious Grakavernichter Witcher 3, or Total War Warhammer 2, BF1 and (if EA doesn't stuff it with gambling again) possibly BFV.
In my experience, FPS benchmarks (of freshly installed systems) are usually 10-15% lower in real-world use when they run on my system. That's ok as far as it goes, a PC is not a console with exactly the same hardware. - And ray tracing really doesn't interest me.
It's just hard to estimate how much it's worth.
If the 2080 "only" cost 800, as it used to... then my question wouldn't even exist.
The price just hurts a lot... about the budget... I can certainly afford it, I save quite a lot and therefore it is also possible, but whether I "want" to afford it .... I will think about it and see if I can find specific benchmarks.
