Do I really need an M2 with a heatsink for a gaming laptop or does that not matter? My current M.2 without heatsink and with PCi Gen 4 speed doesn't get hotter than 51 degrees even when gaming, which is normal temperature. So is this pure marketing and another source of income for the manufacturers?

A heatsink is usually not necessary, because an SSD only heats up in extreme cases and even then it would not break but simply become slower. It is not absolutely necessary to buy an SSD with a heat sink. I also think that this is often exaggerated.
