Can you open the lid to scan or copy a book, etc.? If no, what would be a good product in the price range? Thanks for the support.

Yes, that is possible. The machine has an original glass up to size LGL/LTR - i.e. larger than A4. The scanner comes to light when you lift the upper white part (document feeder).
