Can I attach the mobile phone directly to the handlebar with this kit or do I also need a mobile phone case?

Of course, you also need the Handycase to match your device. The holder is super!!!!
You can also buy the item 6042855, Quad Lock Universal Adapter V2, which you can stick directly onto any smartphone case. That's what I did. It's a great fit and, in my opinion, doesn't get in the way of everyday use.
