Are the recordings then always saved on the smartphone and on the SD card? (If one is connected) Or how can a transfer take place?

The 1080p version of the video will be stored in the gallery of your phone. You can view them even without the DJI app. There is an option in app which allows for controlling how much space you want these videos to use in your phone so they don't eat up whole memory but in that case the old videos will be deleted automatically. the original high res 4k version of the video is in the mmicro sd card and you have to use a card reader to transfer them in your computer.
For the pictures, if you are shooting in Jpeg, it automatically get stored in the phone as well.. not the full quality version but more of a preview version. If you are shooting raw, the app requires you to press preview button iin the app to make a jpeg version for viewing on your phone.
In the app however, there is an option to download the high res version via wifi but I would recommend to use just the sdcard to transfer.

Videos and still shots are stored on the SD card. They can be previewed from the Smartphone whilst connected to the Osmo's Wi-Fi. No download is possible, at least with DJI GO. I do not know about other apps such as Litchi.
Still panoramas are stored on the Smartphone. The SD card only contains the unstitched shots (from 3 to 9).
