Compatible hard drives tested and approved by Synology must be used for installation in this NAS. Not all popular hard drives are automatically compatible; Synology recommends using specially tested models to ensure optimal performance and reliability. Synology has a compatibility framework with intensive testing, which mainly includes Synology's own hard drives or brands recommended by Synology such as Seagate IronWolf, Toshiba N300 and Western Digital Red Plus.
When purchasing, you should therefore make sure that the hard drives are on the official Synology compatibility list to avoid problems. The NAS supports 3.5" SATA HDDs and 2.5" SATA SSDs, as well as M.2 NVMe SSDs for caching, but the hard drives should be suitable for NAS use and ideally come from the Synology-recommended list.
