According to the Canon R3 instruction manual, you need the AD-E1 accessory adapter. Do you have this adapter in your range?

This adapter is not absolutely necessary... You can take pictures without it (with and without flash). This adapter is only there to protect the newly installed pins in the flash shoe from moisture in the rain or similar influences.
