The underlying effect is photocatalysis, where excitons (bound electron-hole pairs) are formed by the light charge, splitting water and dirt into their molecules. This charging prevents the formation of drops and also facilitates the organic decomposition of dirt on the glass surface, allowing it to dry quickly and remain clean.
