The MAX7219CNG is a compact, serial input/output DC cathode display driver that can connect microprocessors to 7-segment digit displays. It supports LED displays with up to 8 digits, bar graphs, or 64 individual LEDs. The chip includes a BCD code B decoder, multiplex scan circuitry, segment and digit drivers, as well as a static 8x8 RAM that stores each digit.
Communication with the MAX7219 is done via a convenient serial 4-wire interface (supports SPI). Individual digits can be addressed and updated without rewriting the entire display. Only one external resistor is required to set the segment current for all LEDs.
The IC also features a low power shutdown mode at 150 µA, analog and digital brightness control, a scan limit register that allows the user to display from 1 to 8 digits, and a test mode that activates all LEDs.
This device comes in a 24-pin DIP package.
