Fiber jumpers are well-defined components in the international standard of structured cabling ISO/IEC 11801. Due to the many different network protocols created in the last 25 years, a wide range of connectors has been developed. Some of them are still important today: LC, SC, E2000®, MPO/MTP.

Fiber jumpers (patch cords) are defined as the shortest connection between a passive interface and an active device port, according to the structured cabling standard. The rating of performance, known as category, as well as the performance of the total transmission channel, known as link class. Similar descriptions for patch cords include connection cable, drop cable, adapter cable, interconnecting cord, and jumper.
