Product details
Connect your Arduino to the Internet with this beautiful new FCC-certified WiFi module from Atmel.
This 802.11bgn capable WiFi module is the best innovation for networking your devices, featuring SSL support and rock-solid performance. Our adafruit.io MQTT demo ran for an entire weekend without a hitch. We like this module so much that we use it for all our projects.
The Adafruit ATWINC1500 WiFi Breakout uses SPI for communication, allowing you to complete your wiring with just about 6 wires. The library provided by Atmel works excellently with the Arduino Zero and seems to function well with the Uno, but may cause issues with other Arduinos. You can use it as fast as 12 MHz for quick, reliable packet streaming. Scanning and connecting to networks is very fast and takes only a few seconds.
This module works with 802.11b, g, or n networks and supports WEP, WPA, and WPA2 encryption. You can use it in Soft AP mode to create an ad-hoc network. For secure client connections, there is TLS 1.2 support in firmware version 19.4.4.
Since this is our new favorite WiFi module with SPI protocol, we decided to create a small breakout for it. The breakout comes with level shifting on all input pins, allowing you to use it with 3V or 5V logic. A 3.3V voltage regulator that can handle 300mA peaks enables you to power it from 3-5.5VDC. There are also 3 LEDs that you can control via the SPI interface or the Arduino library. They light up when connected to an SSID or when transmitting data.
Note: This version does not come with a board antenna. You will need a uFL connector antenna, such as a 2.4GHz Mini Flexible WiFi antenna, which is not included.
