Mafia III takes place in the open world of New Bordeaux, a reimagined version of the turbulent New Orleans of 1968, complete with era-inspired cars, fashion, and music. After years of fighting in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay has come to understand one thing: family is not about who you were born to – it’s about the people you would die for. Back in his hometown of New Bordeaux, Lincoln wants to leave his criminal past behind.

However, when his surrogate family, the Black mob, is betrayed and murdered by the Italian Mafia, Lincoln builds a new family from the ashes of his old world and embarks on a military-scale quest for revenge against those responsible. To survive in the streets of New Bordeaux, one must master wild shootouts, brutal fistfights, high-speed maneuvers, tough decisions, and street tricks. But with the right people, you can rise to the top of the city's underworld.

Die größte Stärke von Mafia III ist die tollen weil dichte Atmosphäre, wobei auch die Erzählung sehr gelungen ist. Aber auch akustisch macht der Action-Titel in der dritten Ausgabe einen sehr guten Eindruck, der Soundtrack ist sehr gelungen. Leider verspielt der Titel aufgrund sehr vieler Bugs viel Kredit, vor allem aber die unfassbar schwachen Gegner-KI lassen Glaubwürdigkeit vermissen.

Ein Fazit zu Mafia III kann nur zwiespältig ausfallen. Auf der einen Seite macht das Spiel einfach richtig Spaß und Maus oder Gamepad lassen sich nur schwer aus der Hand legen. Die Atmosphäre ist erstklassig und die Figuren des Spiels wirken authentisch und sehen sehr gut aus. Das Spiel macht süchtig, wenn auch die Missionen mit der Zeit Abwechslungsreichtum vermissen lassen...

Mafia 3 ist ambitioniert. Doch Hangar 13 hat sich vollkommen überhoben. Während die Zwischensequenzen mit zum Besten gehören, was man derzeit neben Uncharted 4 genießen kann und die Rachemär zwar nicht außergewöhnlich ist, aber dennoch stimmungsvoll erzählt wird, bleibt das Spiel in der offenen Welt nach anfänglicher Euphorie zunehmend hinter den Erwartungen zurück...

Mafia 3 könnte ein sehr gutes Spiel sein. Selten ist uns ein Titel untergekommen, der sein historisches Setting derart elegant einfließen ließ. Wenn wir uns durch New Bordeaux bewegen, spüren wir den Geist der Zeit ? mit allen Vorzügen (der Swing der späten 60er!) und Abgründen (Rassismus, Kommunistenhatz)...
