    Not suitable for long-term use

It's OK. It does look a bit fragile, but with proper treatment it should work for a long time. It was one of the first products of this kind. It was high time something like this was invented, the previous solutions with the "caddies" were so impractical.
Remember that the part here is "only" designed for SATA2 (300MB/s).
Also remember to set "hot swapping" for this port in the BIOS.
If ejection is not possible in the OS using "Safely Remove Hardware" (disks are not started), this can be done with the freeware HotSwap! Ejecting and inserting hard disks in operation works here (on Vista64) with SATA2 or SATA3 hard disks, but not with SATA1 hard disks (1st generation with 150MB/s).

EDIT: Must correct my rating. The part is not even 2 years old. In the meantime, there are always contact problems between the hard drive and the bay, the corresponding point seems to be worn out already, and that without many "changes". This is expressed in such a way that the hard disk is no longer read / listed. Very disappointing, does not seem very mature, I reduce from 4 to 1 star ...

EDIT 2: raidsonic.de, the distributor/producer of this part, at least delivered the corresponding spare part (connector for the SATA/power connections) without any problems after providing the serial number. I'll raise it to 3 stars ...

EDIT 3: After replacing the transition piece (see above), the part lasted another 3 years with little use, I had an estimated maximum of 500-1000 hard disk insertions/exceptions. The part is simply not designed for continuous use. I'm lowering it again to 1 star ...

In perfect use for 10 years (3 pieces).

The successor IB-158SK-B (currently not available at Digitec) is unfortunately no longer compatible with the 2.5" to 3.5" converter IB-2536StS, of which I also use several and the combination is IMPOSSIBLE if you have a lot to do with external data carriers including SSDs.

I've had two Icy Box IB-168SK-B in my PC for 4 years and wouldn't want to do without them. The fast and problem-free changing of the HD's is also enormously pratic for backups. The manufacturer calls the contact system NSS (No Scratch SATA) and promises approx. 50,000 mating cycles. I was a little sceptical at first, because I didn't understand how this could be achieved when I looked at the contact system. I change the HDs practically every day, often several times, so that in the meantime I have accumulated over a thousand mating cycles. When inspecting the contacts with a magnifying glass, both on the Icy Box and on the HDs, I have not noticed any wear so far.

    Pro

    • Works as it should, mechanically flawless and reliable
    • Virtually no contact wear after 4 years of use

    Contra
