Whether the weather: a quick guide to weather stations

What’s a weather station capable of and which model suits your needs? Here’s a quick guide to the range of weather stations we have on offer.

Weather stations are great instruments to give you insights into the current atmospheric conditions without having to leave your living room. While a simple, analog weather station measures the temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity, more complex, digital weather stations provide even more data. Which model is for you?

How do weather stations work?

Weather stations include different sensors to measure weather conditions and make forecasts based on this data – just like professional weather services do. Analog models often only measure the temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity, while interpreting this data is up to the owner and requires knowledge of the data. Digital models are capable of delivering complex results and calculate prognosis automatically. What’s important with digital models is to check the intervals in which measurements are updated, as this is what sets more expensive models apart from low-priced ones. In today’s «smart» times, it goes without saying that there are smartphone apps for some current models, allowing you to visualise your data instantly.

Analog models
Analog models have been around for a long time and are still produced today. They are basically a compilation of several measurement instruments, as for example a thermometer (measures temperature), a barometer (measures atmospheric pressure) and a hygrometer (measures humidity). You need a bit of know-how to be able to give a prognosis based on the results. What does low air pressure indicate? If this question is easy for you to answer, an analogue model will do the job. The same applies if all you want is to see the current measurements.

Digital models
Digital weather stations differ from analog models when it comes to how they work and what they measure. Digital instruments are equipped with sensors, often referred to as satellites, which collect data. The more complex and extensive the network of sensors is, the more informative the results are. Some models are connected to a computer, offering even more possibilities. With special analysing software, the collected data is visualised in charts and diagrams, which allows observing weather changes over an extended period.

Digital models with app
Some digital models come with an app, making it possible to track the data and forecasts for your location and check diagrams from wherever you are.
