Update for the Bosch smart system: e-bike becomes a tour planner

With the latest update, all e-bikes with a smart system from Bosch have access to new functions. The highlight: I can decide for myself how much battery is used on a particular route.
More than 100 bicycle brands use the Bosch modular system. The German manufacturer offers motors, batteries, displays and other components, which bike manufacturers then combine as they wish. A smart system with an app has been available since 2021, which is regularly updated with new functions.
Control the battery range yourself
The most important new feature is called "Range Control". The idea is that you can control how much battery the e-bike uses on a journey, as Bosch explains in a press release. For example, you can programme a tour on which you use a maximum of 40 per cent of the battery on the outward journey - and still have 60 per cent battery for the return journey.

And this is how the feature, which I have already tried out briefly, actually works: If you enter a route via the Bosch "Flow" app, you will now see the menu item "Range Control" in the route overview. You can activate it using the slider and enter the per cent of battery you want to have left at your destination.
By clicking on "Learn more about Range Control", you can gradually adjust the percentage and see whether you can still count on the full support of the electric motor with this setting. Or whether this needs to be reduced if you want to reach your destination with enough remaining capacity.
The system learns over time and should therefore become increasingly precise. Among other things, because the driver's own driving behaviour is taken into account, as Bosch states.

Important to know: You can only activate "Range Control" if you are connected to the bike via Bluetooth. In addition, the selected riding profile is overridden if necessary to ensure the remaining runtime.
Detail work is also important
The Bosch system also has a few small improvements - but these can make life on the bike much easier. For example, if you use your smartphone with the mount as a speedometer and display. This is particularly helpful when using route planning.

You can now use a button to specify whether the ridescreen, i.e. the display with all the information, is shown in portrait or landscape format. On the one hand, this prevents unintentional rotation due to the gyroscope in the smartphone and, on the other, the app remembers your preferred setting.

Also new: The existing Purion 200 display can now be customised. You can change screens and determine the order yourself. 30 different pieces of information are available for display. Bosch is also expanding the statistics that can be called up after each ride: you can see the CO2 emissions saved compared to a car journey on the same route. And if you are using a bike with ABS, it shows the number of braking operations - and whether the anti-lock braking system had to intervene.

How to get the update
The prerequisite for enjoying these features is that you have installed the smart system from Bosch in your e-bike. If you can connect your bike to the Flow app, this is the case. As the old system continues to be produced and sold without an app and updates, you need to inform yourself well when buying a new bike and look for the term "Bosch Smart System".
In our shop, for example, these models are equipped with it:
