These sparkling water makers make it really sparkling

Carbonating tap water - sparkling water makers literally only have one job. But how well do they do it? Most are good to satisfactory, says Stiftung Warentest.

I'm more of the quiet type - at least when it comes to my water preference. For me, nothing beats fresh, cool tap water. Blöterli water, i.e. carbonated water, is only available in our house for my wife's mojitos.

Despite my personal preference, I understand the people whose water has to be nice and sparkling, as Dittsche always says when drinking beer. A sparkling water maker makes perfect sense, both from a financial and ecological point of view, as Kassensturz has already discovered. You might also get your children to drink more water. In any case, it worked for my colleague Michael.

In principle, all sparkling water makers are the same: they pump carbon dioxide into tap water. Stiftung Warentest has investigated how well they do this. The German consumer organisation tested and evaluated seven devices according to the following criteria: Effervescence, handling, safety, health and the environment.

This tingles so beautifully

The «Blue Fizz» from Grohe scored top marks in the supreme discipline «Effervescence» - a straight 1 according to the German grading system. According to Stiftung Warentest, its handling is only «satisfactory». Nevertheless, Grohe won the test with a 1.7 and the quality rating «Good».

The «Crystal 3.0» from Sodastream (score 1.8) follows close behind. This sparkling water maker scored good to very good across the board. When it comes to fizzing (score 2.3), however, it is far from being able to hold a candle to the test winner.

Only «satisfactory» is the sparkling performance of the «Woody» from Mysoda. The fact that it still makes it into the good sparkling water dispensers is thanks to its consistently good performance in the other criteria. With an overall score of 2.3, it landed in third place. It was also awarded the title «Price-performance winner» by Stiftung Warentest.

The «Carbonator 3» from Aarke bubbles up water better than the device from Mysoda, but has to make compromises in other respects. Nevertheless, with a score of 2.4, it is still one of the «good».

Just a little carbonation, please

If the effervescence result is only «satisfactory», this automatically leads to a downgrade in the overall score, as Stiftung Warentest states. The «Terra» from Sodastream and the «sodaOne» from Brita are particularly affected by this. Despite good to very good test performances in the other areas, both had to settle for a «Satisfactory» in the overall assessment.

Spout with overflow system

The «Logan» from Sodapop was not rated at all for fizzing. It was unpredictable when bubbling and kept breaking down, writes Stiftung Warentest in the detailed test report, which you have to pay for.

During the bubbling process, water repeatedly leaked out of the «Logan» during testing, which made further bubbling impossible. Before the experts could continue, they had to laboriously dry the inside of the appliance each time. This is not a solution for consumers:

The Stiftung Warentest quality rating is therefore «Poor».
