The hands-free double breast pump from Avent delivers

This breast pump is said to be so efficient and at the same time more comfortable than any other. But is that true? A friend of mine gave it a try.

The hands-free double electric breast pump from Avent was the focus of a product presentation I attended a few weeks ago. The product claim includes the following three essentials.

  1. Thanks to the adapters supplied, the pump should fit more than 80 per cent of all users and be comfortable to wear.
  2. The device imitates a baby’s sucking, which is supposed to make pumping more efficient.
  3. The pump should be easy to integrate into everyday life, as you don’t have to sit down while using it. The electric unit is portable and handsfree, leaving the wearer free to do other things.

Since I couldn’t test the pump myself for biological reasons, I handed it to a friend. Lena, mother of two, has already tried other breast pumps and has been using the Avent model for a few weeks.

Unboxing

The Avent box contains many parts: a motor unit, various tubes, collection cups and breast pads. All this stuff is self-explanatory; Lena didn’t have any issues with the assembly. «I was able to put it together straightaway, without instructions. But I checked the description at the end to make sure I’d done everything right. And that was that.»

Assembly isn’t difficult.

Lena reckons that she’d have had no problems assembling the Avent even without any previous knowledge. So that’s a definite win in the «intuitive handling» discipline.

Fit – works without the nipple sizing card too

In the product presentation, Avent emphasised that the adapters included with the breast pads fit the majority of women. But why’s that so important? Lena explains: «I’d never have thought breasts could be so different. I only realised that after seeing so many mummy friends and then so many breasts while breastfeeding.» According to Lena, a poor fit not only feels uncomfortable, it can also impact how much is pumped.

To ensure that everything fits perfectly, the adapters (in the middle), can be ordered in other sizes.

After all, an 80 per cent fit rate isn’t the same as 100 per cent. So what if the Avent pump doesn’t sit correctly then? As nipples vary in size and shape, a nipple size card is included. It allows you to determine the required size so that you can order separately available adapters directly from Avent.

Lena: «I think it’s a really great solution to have different adapters. I’ve used another breast pump before and it didn’t really fit, so it was quite annoying to use. Including a sizing card is a great idea.»

A few minus points for the motor

Lena’s verdict on the pump’s wearing comfort is overwhelmingly positive. «It all feels really comfortable. You can’t even feel the breast shields in your bra. There’s no pinching, scratching or irritation. In fact, I caught myself double-checking they were still in place a few times because they were just that comfortable.»

There was, however, one thing she wasn’t happy about. Wearers can hang the motor unit around their neck using the strap supplied. This gives you freedom to move, but can have its pitfalls.

«The problem is that the motor unit then dangles directly from your body. Once I had to wipe my big girl’s bottom. And the motor was in the way because it fell forward. It’d be better if there was also a little loop to hook it on to a belt or waistband.»

The control unit keeps the wearer mobile. In everyday use, however, it sometimes gets in the way.

Lena doesn’t find the pumping noise annoying. You can hear the unit, but your children can still sleep in mum’s arms. She also gives it extra points for the screen and the controls.

Cleaning

The Avent’s pumping performance is impressive. Lena has zero complaints. Another plus point is that disassembly and maintenance are just as easy as assembly. She washes the drip trays, adapters and tubes and lays them on a towel to dry. «That was all I had to do.»

So everything was perfect? Not quite. Emptying the collection cups wasn’t as easy as Lena had hoped. «The silicone seals are quite tight, so it’s a bit fiddly to decant the milk.»

And what are the test results after a few weeks?

Lena: «I can recommend the pump and have also told fellow mum friends about it. The handling, cleaning and pumping performance are really good. And I think it’s good that Avent has also thought about offering other adapters for women whose breasts don’t work so well with the collection cups. Saying that, I wouldn’t buy the pump myself. And that’s because of the dangling motor unit. It got in my way. Personally, I prefer the kind that sits inside your bra.»
