Switzerland’s ready for spring cleaning

From vacuum cleaners and bin liners to laundry detergents: household and cleaning products are often bought online. In 2023, our customers ordered 40 per cent more of them than in the previous year. It’s that time of year again – people are preparing for their spring clean. Window and floor cleaners recorded the biggest increase in sales in the first quarter of the year.

Tidying is back in fashion – and Marie Kondo might well be part of the reason. But not just organisation and tidying coaches are booming, cleaning influencers such as Anna Louisa (@annalouisaathome) and Vanesa Amaro (@vanesaamaro_) are also inspiring an audience of millions on social media. The woman for tough jobs is Auri Kananen (@aurikatariina) from Finland – she cleans messy apartments for free.

Ultrasonic cleaners take centre stage

People in Switzerland also like it clean. Whether they do the cleaning themselves or whether third parties help is unknown. What we do know is Galaxus customers have been busy buying their cleaning supplies in the first quarter of 2024. Cleaning products, cleaning utensils and laundry detergents were the most common items in the shopping basket.

The steepest growth curve in the first quarter of the year was seen in sales of window, floor and ultrasonic cleaners. It sounds like spring cleaning is near!

More kitchen roll, please

Every year our customers are ordering more and more cleaning utensils and household items. After all, who likes lugging kitchen roll, laundry detergent or cleaning products home from the supermarket?

What does the growth in sales of fast-moving cleaning products – FMCG in technical jargon – over the last five years looks like? The frontrunner is kitchen roll, with sales up by over 3000 per cent. Dishwashing liquid and toilet paper take second and third place. In the electronic appliances range, the ultrasonic cleaner (+ 525%) outperformed the steam cleaner (+ 310%) and the high-pressure cleaner (+ 286%) in terms of sales growth.

Are you planning your spring clean soon or are you giving it a miss? Where do you buy your cleaning products and utensils? In store or online? And are you the cleaner of the household or do you have help from others? Join the discussion in the comments!

Studies claim that we have a shorter attention span than goldfish. Ouch! My job is to get your attention as often and for as long as possible. How? With content you enjoy. Outside of the office, you’ll find me on the tennis court, curled up with a book, Netflixing or travelling.
