Sophisticated shelving for design-savvy interior designers

For a selection of the smartest designs in our range, I regularly take you to the "CC". This time for open shelves.

I'm not a minimalist when it comes to furnishings, but I make a conscious choice about what I put in my home. For me, an open shelf unit for the living room is out of the question. It offers me storage space and a display area. I curate what's on it with dedication like an exhibition. With vases, souvenirs and the like, the shelf becomes a still life that gets loud when I have visitors. Books, for example, tempt you to browse through them and provide a topic of conversation.

A wall shelf is not just an eye-catcher, but a living miracle that can accompany you for a long time. Compared to other furniture, it has the quality of always being able to be reinvented with what you place on it. You can use it to deliberately showcase things or hide them away in boxes and baskets. There's no doubt in your mind that an open shelf is an essential part of any home? Then all you have to do now is decide on a design that you like. Here is a small overview of the clever models in our range.

1. "Fischer"

Although I'm not a minimalist, the modular shelving system from Berlin label Objects of Our Days is: milled handles and a maximum of three different materials make this piece of furniture purist. You can choose between ash, MDF and powder-coated steel for the modules and shelves. "Fischer" can be used individually as a sideboard or in multiple versions as a room divider. With the design by designer David Spinner, you can do without additional storage solutions because it already has a closed area. Favourites such as picture frames can be placed on the other shelves for display. In addition to the material, you can choose between four colour options: all white, black or in combination with ash wood elements. If you are less decisive, you can choose three modules, for example: one made of wood with a white frame and two made of metal and wood modules. They fit together thanks to the same frames and stand alone. All-round furniture that adapts to your needs.

2. "Impostor"

The Tojo shelf meets your needs and saves you time-consuming assembly. The sides are milled so that you can attach add-on modules without screws. If you're a secretive person, doors hide your belongings. If you are transparent, use the basic module. You can create a shelf with modules of the same type or combine different ones. You can also choose between white or grey lacquered MDF wood for the colours. You can find out which elements you need for your desired combination here:

3. "Rack"

The "Rack" series from House Doctor has three shelves to choose from: two flat models, each with four compartments but different lengths, and one with six compartments. They fit together because they are all reduced to the essentials and made from the same material. All in black and constructed with thin metal rods, this shelf has a discreet look.

4. "Wall"

Once assembled, the ladder shelf from Interstil can be leant against the wall and extended as required. You can choose between two lengths and mix and match them. You can choose different formats or colours: "Wall" is available in white or grey lacquered MDF. Whether as a bookcase or shoe rack, it's an all-rounder that can be used in any room.

5. "Sunny"

The "Sunny" series from Furn consists of three matching variants: one with two, three or four shelves. When placed next to each other, they appear as a whole. If required, they can also be used individually. Their shelves are made of oak wood and their frame is made of powder-coated metal. This means they blend in well in rooms with wooden floors and alternatives.

6. "Stick"

The name already reveals how the multifunctional shelving unit from Menu is put together. The individual bars made of solid wood or metal are connected to each other using a plug-in system. This makes it variable. If desired, you can extend the shelf and slot it together so that it forms a right angle for the corner of a room. The design by Czech duo Jan Plechác and Henry Wielgus is aimed at a public that wants to be mobile and is often exposed to new spatial situations.

7. "Locarno"

Whether as a basic element or a combination of several extension modules, this series scores with simplicity. Here you can choose between open shelves, double drawers or an MDF insert closed at the back. This makes the shelf suitable as a room divider. It is made of metal without the MDF insert and comes in a plain white colour. You can find all modules here.

8. "Mixrack"

The "Lowboard" from Showroom Finland Oy has a seat height and is ideal if you want to use the length of a wall instead of the height. Placed next to each other, it looks like a single piece, even in different colours, because the edges of the surfaces are left natural. The rest of the shelves and the steel wire are painted in black or white. There is also a choice of two different formats, each 100 or 150 centimetres long with the same height and depth.

9. "Random"

The wall shelf from MDF Galaxus in Italy leaves nothing to chance. As a system fanatic, it offers you numerous small compartments in which you can store your things. As a soloist, duo or group, it makes efficient use of a vertical wall with a height of 217 centimetres compared to conventional shelving units. It's perfect for books in the living room or small items in the games and hobby room.
