Some call them dramatic, others find them unbearable - but they could have been written in real life. "Like a Single Day" is based on the novel of the same name by tearjerker king Nicholas Sparks. For anyone who has never heard of Sparks: He writes love stories and he writes them damn well - and endlessly dramatically. At the beginning of the film, an elderly man tells an old lady in a nursing home a story. He reads from a notebook and talks about the heartbreaking love story of Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling). The two meet in their youth and experience a stormy summer full of love. Allie comes from a wealthy family and Noah from a working-class family, which causes problems because Allie's parents are clearly against their young love. As the film progresses, it soon becomes clear that the retired businessman is talking about himself and the woman sitting opposite him, who sadly suffers from dementia. It soon becomes clear that the old Noah is desperately trying to get his Allie back with these stories. Because Alzheimer's has taken her from him and she hardly recognises anyone anymore. An incredibly sad story about the first great love and with lots of romance.
And because he really is the boss in his field, another work by Nicholas Sparks follows immediately: "Only With You - A Walk to Remember". In this drama, Landon (Shane West), who is one of the cool kids at school, falls in love with the well-educated daughter of the local priest Jamie (Mandy Moore). The love between the two youngsters is kindled when they meet in drama class, where Landon has to take part as a punishment. The two play the leading roles in the school play and Jamie practises diligently with Landon. At the beginning, he vows never to fall in love with the nerdy girl. But what is not turns into a great romance over time. As Landon slowly falls in love with Jamie, there's one thing he doesn't realise: Jamie is terminally ill with leukaemia... Even if you're hoping for the big happy ending, don't forget the Kleenex box.
"Love, Rosie" proves that friendship can become love after all. The dramatic romantic comedy shows how the two best friends Rosie (Lily Collins) and Alex (Sam Claflin) gradually fall in love without realising it. The two know each other from their sandpit days and have no secrets from each other. They have also planned their future together - purely as friends, of course - but suddenly everything changes. When Rosie becomes unintentionally pregnant after a one-night stand, they go their separate ways. While Rosie is forced to give up all her dreams, Alex pursues the realisation of his desires. But Hollywood provides the big happy ending: after a lot of back and forth, what feels like a hundred years and a good dose of drama, the two finally find each other.
"Two in a Day" also revolves around two people who know that they can't live without each other, but who keep drifting apart. The film is based on the novel "One Day" by David Nicholls and shows how Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess) orbit around each other and yet never quite find each other. The love affair begins at the couple's graduation party, which takes place on 15 July 1988. Emma and Dexter spend the night together and although they are completely different, they decide to remain friends. From then on, we see how the two lovebirds change over almost 20 years, how their lives develop and where they are on the 15th of July every year. They are always there for each other and yet never together in the same place. When they finally seem to be united and happy, the tragic accident happens! Let yourself be surprised - albeit in a sad way.
Movies based on true events are the nastiest of all. No matter how hard you fight it, in such cases it's simply not worth fighting back the tears. "Forever Love" is one such film and tells the true life story of Paige (Rachel McAdams) and Leo (Channing Tatum), who are newly married and have to cope with a heavy blow of fate. Paige only just survives a car accident that has drastic consequences: Paige simply cannot remember her young husband Leo. All she has left are memories from the time before Leo and suddenly she believes she is still with her ex-fiancé Jeremy (Scott Speedman). Leo fights bitterly and with all his might to win back the love of his life. See for yourself whether he succeeds, or whether fate once again throws a wrench in his plans.
Oh God, how we cried in 2007 when Gerry (Gerard Butler) dies in the romantic drama "P.S. I Love You" and leaves letters with tasks for his beloved wife Holly (Hilary Swank). Holly receives the first letter on her 30th birthday and the last one is handed to her by Gerry's mother in Ireland. Each one describes something Holly should do and ends with the sentence "P.S. I love you". Whilst she firmly believes that the letters help her to come to terms with her loss, her best friends believe that they only keep Holly stuck in her sad memories. On her trip to Ireland, which is also one of her tasks, fate plays another trick on her and she accidentally meets her deceased husband's best friend William (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).
The name says it all: the film "Fate is a rotten betrayer" is anything but fair. Life can be really nasty sometimes and all too often gives us an unexpected slap in the face. This drama, based on the novel of the same name by John Green, revolves around the love between two young people who have been diagnosed with cancer. What more can you say? It really sucks! When Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Augustus (Ansel Elgort) meet at a support group for young cancer sufferers, everything seems to be fine. Although Augustus has already beaten cancer once and Hazel is still suffering from her illness, but nothing worse is imminent, the two spend a wonderful time together. They become inseparable and for both of them it is their first great and true love. If only fate wasn't lying in wait again... Crying fits included!

Jerry Zucker created an absolutely dramatic masterpiece in 1990. With Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in the leading roles, he brought two Hollywood greats on board who never fail to move us to tears. It is the story of Sam (Patrick Swayze) and his wife Molly (Demi Moore), who works as an artist. Their happiness seems to be perfect and they believe they still have their whole lives and a future together ahead of them. But suddenly everything changes at a stroke: on their way home from a visit to the theatre, the couple are mugged. A shot is fired and Sam is hit. It takes some time for the successful banker to realise what has happened. Suddenly he finds himself in a limbo and has to come to terms with what has happened. When he still can't find peace, a ghost tells him that he still has a task to fulfil on earth. Because his murderer has not yet been caught. And his head is still spinning: what will happen to Molly, the love of his life?
"Brokeback Mountain" is all about two cowboys, Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis (Heath Ledger), who find each other in the mountains of Wyoming and develop a deep friendship that leads to an intimate love affair. Unfortunately, the film is set at a time when relationships of this kind are not welcome in America's provincial towns. That's why Jack and Ennis go their separate ways. They grow apart, find each other again and always feel this deep affection for each other. Both cowboys marry a woman - but the marriages only serve as relationships of convenience to keep up appearances. Driven by society and in order to please everyone, the two family men decide never to reveal their love. They meet several times a year and travel to the same remote area where they once met to live out their love in secret. "Brokeback Mountain" is a film about social hurdles, pride and a lot of prejudice. See for yourself whether or not there is a happy ending for Ennis and Jack in the end.
Although "Pearl Harbor" is a war drama, the love triangle between Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale), Rafe (Ben Affleck) and Danny (Josh Hartnett) takes centre stage. Rafe and Danny have known each other since they were little and are still best friends as adults. Together they enlist in the army and serve as pilots. When the Second World War reaches the borders of the USA, Rafe enlists. Shortly beforehand, he meets the beautiful nurse Evelyn and the two begin a fiery romance. He promises both his best friend and his lover that he will come back from the war in one piece. Unfortunately, everything turns out differently and Rafe is declared dead after a mission in Germany. During this difficult time, his closest relatives console each other and eventually Evelyn and Danny fall in love. The war continues to take its course and Danny and Evelyn are transferred to Hawaii, where Rafe miraculously returns shortly before the Japanese forces attack Pearl Harbor.
