Samsung washing machines: more economical than the energy label allows

Samsung is launching new washing machines that undercut the current best energy efficiency class by 10 to 40 per cent.

A typical household uses around 16 per cent of its total electricity for washing and drying. It can therefore be well worth looking at the energy label when buying a new appliance.

The best category is labelled with the letter A. At our shop, you can sort by energy efficiency class. You can also see that around 200 out of 300 washing machines achieve the best class. This makes it difficult to choose.

Energy efficiency A is not the same as energy efficiency A

Samsung therefore not only advertises the latest generation of washing machines as achieving energy efficiency A, but also as undercutting the requirements of the highest class by 10 to 40 per cent. A total of six such models are already available or will be launched on the market in the coming weeks. Such as the top model 8400D, which is already in our range under the model name WW11DB8B95GHU5.

Samsung advertises it as energy efficiency A minus 40 per cent. The machine with an 11-kilogram load consumes 32 kWh. By comparison, models in energy efficiency category E with the same load consume 70 to 100 kWh, i.e. twice or even more than three times as much electricity.

But even in category A, you will find models with a load of 10 or 11 kilograms that consume over 50 kWh. You can always find this information in the small print of the energy label. It is therefore worth reading this and not just looking at the general category.

How Samsung saves electricity

Different technologies ensure that the new washing machines are energy efficient. The so-called bubble shot is central to this: here, the soapy water is sprayed onto the laundry by the circulation pump, soaking it quickly and evenly. This saves up to 25 per cent of washing time and therefore energy.

Different modes with artificial intelligence also increase efficiency. The washing machine can recognise the type of fabric and adjust the wash cycle accordingly. The machine also automatically lowers the water temperature as much as possible, which can also significantly reduce power consumption.

You can use your smartphone to monitor the washing machine's energy consumption and even set targets. Samsung then automatically switches to energy mode, which washes for significantly longer but saves even more.

However, it is also clear that energy efficiency costs money to purchase. Only the most expensive model mentioned above, the WW8400D for 1850 francs, achieves energy efficiency A minus 40 per cent, the mid-range WW7400D for 1600 to 1700 francs achieves energy efficiency A minus 20 per cent and the entry-level appliances WW6000D/WW6400D and WW5000D for less than 1000 francs achieve energy efficiency A minus 10 per cent.

Here are the two other models with energy efficiency A minus 20 per cent that are already available to order in our shop. The cheapest variants will be available in the coming weeks.

Gadgets are my passion - whether you need them for the home office, for the household, for sport and pleasure or for the smart home. Or, of course, for the big hobby next to the family, namely fishing.
