Why would anyone wear anything other than running shoes?
by Patrick Bardelli
I spent my summer vacations in and around Stockholm and did 20,000+ steps every day. My trail runners by Saucony came in more than handy. City trip or not, I don’t wear regular street shoes any more.
30 years ago, my love affair with sneakers began with the Superstar by Adidas. Today, piles of sneakers of various brands are jammed into my shoe cabinets. My wife’s not a fan. Unlike me – I (almost) exclusively wear running shoes. What’s more, I’ve become so used to this footwear that I find it difficult to wear anything else.
Sweden, summer holidays 2023. We’d wanted to travel to Stockholm and some of the surrounding archipelago islands for a long time. The weather? Well, let’s say getting a sunburn wasn’t our main concern. My footwear? The Peregrine 13 ST trail runners by Saucony.
One minute, the sun is shining, the next minute, it’s raining. The Saucony trail runners aren’t waterproof, but the ankle gaiters keep my feet dry in the event of an occasional downpour. Besides, these shoes are super comfortable and offer plenty of stability. Ever since I started running over ten years ago, I’ve enjoyed looking at people’s footwear. And I’m often shocked when I see the worn-out shoes many people wear – an orthopaedic disaster.
It’s no different in Stockholm. Haven’t these tourists ever heard of solid footwear? I see flatfeet everywhere, a medical condition which can be caused by pronation, i.e. the foot turning inward with each step. I also have flatfeet. By the way, by wearing appropriate footwear and an orthopaedic insole, you can live without any pain or trouble.
It no longer matters where I am. Be it here...
or here...
..I always wear running shoes.
After ten days in Sweden, a few hundred thousand steps and countless kilometres of walking, my conclusion is quickly drawn: I’ve no clue why people go about wearing high heels, worn-out Crocs, run-down street shoes or flip-flops. But hey, to each their own. I’m sticking with my running shoes.
