Rubik’s Cube? Bring it on!
by Ramon Schneider
As promised, here is the first update on my Rubik's Cube Challenge. In the following lines, you can read about the hurdles I had to overcome, the successes I have already achieved and the other goals I have set myself.
A while ago, I made the decision to master the Rubik's Cube. I've been fascinated by the Rubik's Cube since I was a child, but I've never been able to figure out the secret, so I've now set myself the challenge.
When I held the cube in my hands for the first time in about 20 years, I was a little overwhelmed. I turned it at random and quickly realised that this was not the right strategy. As there are over 43 quintillion ways to solve the cube, the random principle is not very promising. So off to the internet and googling for instructions.
I found what I was looking for. I found simple and understandable instructions with illustrations here.
The most important thing is that the centre stone never changes. No matter how many times you turn the cube, the stone in the centre of each side always stays in the same place. So you already know at the start what colour each side has to be at the end.
The strategy with which you approach the cube is also essential. As you don't want to turn the pieces you've already solved on your next turn, you have to be tactical. To do this, you first choose a starting colour. It doesn't matter which colour you choose. I always start with the white colour.
Once you have decided on a colour, only try to solve this first level. You don't need to worry about the other tiles at this stage. For this to work, you need to teach yourself certain algorithms. You can read about these sequences in the instructions linked at the top of the article.
In the meantime, I have already internalised a few algorithms. I can now manage the first level without instructions. I am now able to solve the entire Rubik's Cube. However, I still need a lot of time to do this and I keep making stupid mistakes. Then I have to start all over again. Nevertheless, mastering the first level without instructions is already a big milestone for me and my mastered challenge. 😀
Despite my small success, I still have a long way to go. I want to manage to solve the cube without the instructions. Step by step. Next, I'll work on the middle level. This will definitely be more difficult than what I have achieved so far. The sequences are a lot more complicated and involve several moves. But I'm not giving up. My first successes have given me courage and I'm more motivated than ever to master the Rubik's Cube Challenge.
I will of course keep you up to date with any further successes or setbacks. If you don't want to miss out on any of this, subscribe to my author profile and you'll never miss any of my articles again. <p
