The Sonicare Series 4000 does away with app connectivity and smart functions. The sonic toothbrush focuses on the essentials: mechanical plaque removal, pressure control and clear, minimalist operation.

Electric toothbrushes are part of everyday life. They are better and more efficient than manual toothbrushes according to scientific studies. Many models offer functions such as Bluetooth or artificial intelligence. The Philips Sonicare Series 4000 does without these extras. It concentrates on the core task: mechanical plaque removal using sonic technology.

Technology and vibration

The appliance works with the familiar Sonicare sonic technology. The brush head vibrates at up to 31,000 movements per minute. This frequency creates a flow of fluid that reaches right into the interdental spaces. Cleaning is said to be so effective and thorough.

An integrated pressure sensor protects the gums. If you press too hard, the handpiece automatically reduces the intensity of the vibrations. This function is designed to prevent injuries and wear to the tooth enamel.

Functions and handling

The 4000 series offers two programmes (Clean and Gentle) and two intensity levels. Operation remains simple: you select a setting at the touch of a button and start straight away.

The «SmartTimer» guides you through the recommended two-minute brushing time. The «QuadPacer» divides this into four equal sections and signals the change of jaw quadrant every 30 seconds. This creates an even routine across the entire oral cavity.

An easy-start programme gradually increases performance during the first few applications. This should make it easier to switch from a manual toothbrush.

The design of the handpiece is slim and ergonomic. The battery is based on lithium-ion technology. A full charge lasts around three weeks with regular use.

Maintenance and sustainability

The included «Optimal White W brush head» has densely arranged bristles for even cleaning. Philips includes two brush heads so you are covered for the first few months. The toothbrush is charged via a classic charging station and comes with a travel case.
