Murder and dark secrets: I want to read these 4 thrillers

Every month in this series, I introduce you to books from our range that make me curious. Today it's all about suspense. I've found thrillers and crime novels that deal with dark secrets, murder and money.

This time it's all about suspense. Four stories take you to a secretive village community, a headstrong Italian inspector, a country house with a corpse in the pool and the murderous world of finance.

"Wolf's Greed": Country bumpkins and their secrets

A couple set off on holiday in their caravan. But their holiday luck soon takes a turn for the worse: They run over an animal in the forest. To report the accident, the couple head to the nearest village, but something doesn't seem right. The inhabitants are acting strangely hostile towards them. It soon becomes clear that the tranquil time together is not going to work out.

The description could also fit some of Stephen King's stories. I know from his works that things usually don't go according to plan in remote places in the forest. The description here makes me curious: why are the people in the village in a strange mood? Presumably they are keeping something secret and fear that outsiders will discover their secret. How far will they go to protect it? I want to know.

"Farewell in Italian": Dolce Vita and murder

Out of the big city of Rome and into rural Liguria: An inspector inherits his father's old house. He uses the death to fundamentally change his life and move to the northern Italian coast. But there can be no question of peace and quiet: Two murder cases are already waiting for him in his new home and feisty ladies are making his life difficult.

Normally, I'm not a fan of crime fiction. Someone is dead, someone is investigating against all odds, then a surprising twist, the murderer goes to jail, bang done. But I couldn't scroll past this one. I love Italy, especially Liguria. So the book automatically attracts sympathy. But I also liked the description. An "idiosyncratic Commissario" who investigates "wittily and with a lot of humour". I'm excited and hoping for a summer holiday feeling, coupled with wit and suspense.

"The Widow": After dream comes nightmare

Everyone dreams of winning the lottery. For Nicole and Tom, it worked out and they can afford a luxurious property in the south-west of England. But Nicole soon finds her husband murdered in the pool. There are no suspects. But Nicole knows that someone in her immediate circle must be responsible and now believes herself to be in constant danger.

I like the idea of suddenly being able to buy a luxury house. I like to dream a little myself while reading. The fact that the dream turns into a nightmare would quickly bring me back down to earth. The woman who loses her husband and is now left alone in a hostile environment gives a hint of psychological horror. What's more, according to the book description, the story is "atmospheric, wicked and nerve-wrackingly suspenseful" - what more could you want?

"Dance of Finance": Bloody instead of dry

This economic thriller takes you into the world of banking houses and people in business suits. The German government takes out a loan worth hundreds of billions on favourable terms and invests the money in shares in order to use the hoped-for returns to polish up the clammy state coffers. Unfortunately, the USA now sees its influence on the stock markets under threat and a finance racket turns into a state affair that also keeps the secret services busy. And they are not squeamish with their resources.

Off. I'm regularly overwhelmed with my tax return and never count my change. A thriller from the world of finance? Actually, I imagine funds, stock markets and dividends to be terribly dry. But when there's a lot of money and power involved, someone usually falls by the wayside: I sense human tragedies and characters that you can hate with all your heart. That's why I'd like to think outside the box. Maybe I'll even learn something about finance. Incidentally, the author himself worked in the financial industry for a long time, so you should see the financial world portrayed quite accurately.
