Microsoft just announced Office 365 is now Microsoft 365
Say what? Microsoft Office no longer exists?
But first, let’s nip any arising panic in the bud. Your tried and tested companions Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and Co. will all remain with us. In fact, they’re constantly being improved and, above all, increasingly merged together. With the new «Individual Productivity Suite», Microsoft is focusing on introducing Office, erm... Microsoft 365 to many more life situations, be that at work or home.
So what’s new other than trying to get the old name out of your head?
Fortunately, the fundamentals remain the same and you can still...
...write complaints or your memoires in Word.
...view the duration of the toilet paper you bought on a timeline in Excel.
...create a presentation for your next meeting.
...send your love letters to your address book via Outlook.
...manage and tick off your to-do lists in OneNote.
...organise and share everything via the included 1 TB OneDrive storage.
Think of Microsoft 365 as an extended version of Office rather than the beginning of a new era. So in the future, the individual programmes will be more interlinked – an ecosystem, ready to help us. What has been a standard fixture for businesses, is now set to make its way into homes and smartphones. Here’s an example: After dinner with your friends or family, you can enter the day trip you discussed in the calendar, link the entry with the hiking routes saved in OneNote and share it all with the others.
|Product||Microsoft 365 Family||Microsoft 365 Single||Office Home & Student|
|Number of users||Up to 6 people||1 person||1 person|
|Number of devices||All your devices||1 PC/Mac, 1 tablet||1 PC/Mac, 1 tablet|
|OneDrive Cloud memory||1TB per person||1TB||X|
|Publisher & Access||✓ (only PC)||✓ (only PC)||X|
|Microsoft Family Safety||✓||X||X|
The more various Microsoft 365 programmes communicate with each other, the closer Microsoft gets to combining Windows, OneDrive and Microsoft 365 under one roof for private and business users. Throw Microsoft Teams into the mix, and the software package caters for almost any interface.
What happens to the data?
The data used is not increasing but also becoming more confidential. That's why Microsoft has introduced OneDrive Personal Vault – a protected area where you can save your most important files in a separate location with two-factor authentication. This way, any confidential data remains protected against unauthorised access. In addition, it’s automatically backed up so that it can’t be lost, even if it’s accidentally deleted.
Until the sales start on 21.4.2020 we still have some time to get used to the new name.
