Birkenstock boom: Switzerland has fallen for these iconic sandals
by Catherine Barth
It's never not Birkenstock Arizona season. Even when summer gives way to autumn, they are still in use as faithful slippers. If you also want the cult shoe look but don't want to spend a (small) fortune on them, I recommend one of these seven alternatives.
At one time, they were notorious for being a horrible health hazard. However, for several years now, the "Arizona" sandals (as well as the "Boston" clogs) from German shoe manufacturer Birkenstock have been a firm favourite on every well-stocked shoe shelf.
And they show.
And you can tell. Yes, the Birkenstocks are a little off the beaten track. No wonder - after all, they played a more or less leading role in the "Barbie" blockbuster, were bought up by luxury company LVMH and went public in October 2023. But it's still a bit annoying. First and foremost for our wallets.
Although "Arizona" models are still available for around 50 francs, average prices now range from around 80 to over 120 francs, depending on the material and colour. Erm ... cheeky!
Luckily, you can always rely on at least one brand to produce an affordable dupe of such a bestseller. In the case of the "Arizona" sandals, I even found seven budget-friendly alternatives. Because: none of them cost more than 60 francs. You're welcome.
Always in the mood for good hits, great trips and clinking drinks.
