Human hair vs. synthetic: When do I need which brush?

As soon as the relationship between you and your make-up becomes more serious, it's time to say: Adiós fingers, hello make-up brushes. But what exactly is the difference between human hair and synthetic brushes?

If the "vegan" label is not a must for you when it comes to cosmetics, you can choose between two types of brushes when it comes to make-up: Those made from synthetic fibres and those made from animal hair. Both are suitable for different areas of application. You should therefore think about what you want to use your brush for beforehand so that you choose the right material.

Synthetic brushes

Artificial brush hairs are usually made from polyamide fibres such as nylon or perlon. Unlike human hair, synthetic hairs do not absorb your make-up products as they do not have a cuticle layer. This makes them suitable for applying liquid and creamy textures, i.e. foundation, concealer or cream eyeshadow. They are also particularly useful for precision work on your eyelids and face, as the artificial brush hairs like to nestle together and do not fray so quickly. Another advantage is that they are easy to disinfect without drying out due to the alcohol and thus breaking, as is the case with real hair brushes.

Synthetic hair brushes

Brushes made from animal hair are often handmade, which is reflected in their higher price. The fur of squirrels, goats and horses is usually used. The hairs tend to be stiff at first and become more supple the more you use them. They are best suited for powder textures, as human hair absorbs more pigments and blends them more easily. Unlike synthetic hairs, however, they tend to fray over time. You will therefore notice signs of wear and tear more quickly.

There are now plenty of synthetic brushes on the market that come close to human hair brushes in terms of look and feel. However, if you don't want to do without the latter, I recommend that you find out exactly where the animal hair comes from and how it is obtained before buying. <p

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
