Make your own Harry Potter Christmas decorations: How to make it magical!
by Luca Fontana
I'm not really into jigsaw puzzles. Nevertheless, I'm going to introduce you to this product. Why? Because it's a 3D puzzle and it says "Harry Potter" on it. Two arguments that work for me. Always.
I'm a bit of a stranger today. I normally write about televisions and cinema films for digitec. So when marketing specialist Ludo Penning manages to talk me into presenting a jigsaw puzzle for Galaxus, it's because he has the right arguments up his sleeve: 3D and "Harry Potter".
Because whenever a new film from J.K. Rowling's "Wizarding World" is showing in the cinema, I'm always in a Harry Potter frenzy. Reading films and watching books and stuff. Candles float around my flat, ancient keys with wings whizz around and the Christmas tree is decorated with golden wands and shimmering stag patroni. Once again, I'm completely in my element.
This time: I'm doing puzzles.
I familiarise myself with my new toy. What have I actually got there? Hogwarts - actually just the astronomy tower - from Wrebbit 3D. They make 3D puzzles that consist of pieces that are put together to create a three-dimensional structure. Magical!
875 pieces are supposed to be in the box. I didn't count them, but I decided to trust the print. The enclosed instructions - I didn't realise that puzzles needed this! - explains how to proceed:
Step 1: Remove all the pieces marked with red dots and put them to one side; they are not needed.
Step 2: Assemble the surfaces like an ordinary puzzle, rectangular incisions form the edges.
Step 3: Assemble the surfaces in 3D.
This takes a long time.
This takes a long time. My impatience makes itself felt. I quickly realise: 875 pieces are too many for a puzzle grouch like me.
Don't get me wrong. Patience is a discipline I have not mastered. Ergo, puzzles are rather rare phenomena in my immediate environment. But Ludo's points were good. Too good. I mean: Hogwarts, 3D, magic, Harry Potter, tinkering, crafting, letting your mind wander... Sorry, who can resist? Not me. So I carry on.
Then I suddenly find two pieces that fit together. A dementor looks at me menacingly. Great! Now it's working. But then nothing for a while. When I put three pieces together to form the Hogwarts crest, I giggle to myself as if I've just discovered the company's secret Bertie Botts bean drawer. Jigsaw puzzles are a rollercoaster of emotions.
The castle itself is adorned with many details that only insiders know about. I keep finding things like the aforementioned Dementor, or Hagrid's spider Aragog - in the book Hagrid says he got it from a strange "traveller", and a common fan theory is that this stranger must have been none other than Newt Scamander, who like Hagrid himself always sees the loving animal in the monster - or the symbol of the Deathly Hallows.
It doesn't take long for my editorial colleagues to notice my building project. At first, they eye me with pity. "What? The parts all look the same", "it'll take ages", "I'd rather you than me", and so on. It's almost as if they want to get rid of me just so they can tinker with Hogwarts magic themselves. Because as soon as I turn round, it promptly looks like this.
Despite the concentrated power of the Galaxus editorial team, we didn't finish by the editorial deadline. That's why there's no et-voilà-finished-is-the-puzzle photo here. In any case, my helping house elves and I are still working on the castle. If you want, I can also send you a photo by email as soon as we're finished.

The house elves of the Galaxus editorial team (Ramon, Caro, Raphi and Kevin) have done a great job and actually completed the castle! Who-hoo!
I'm an outdoorsy guy and enjoy sports that push me to the limit – now that’s what I call comfort zone! But I'm also about curling up in an armchair with books about ugly intrigue and sinister kingkillers. Being an avid cinema-goer, I’ve been known to rave about film scores for hours on end. I’ve always wanted to say: «I am Groot.»
