For many, summer means constant shaving or epilating, often followed by ingrown hairs and irritated skin. IPL devices promise a remedy by using light pulses to reduce hair growth in the long term.

The product range of home IPL devices is growing continuously. In addition to the big players Philips, Braun, and Beurer, a provider from China has also entered the European market for some time now: Ulike.

With the latest model, the Air 10 Pro, the company promises a comfortable treatment through sapphire ice cooling and fast, effective hair removal. I took a closer look at whether these promises hold up. I have already put its predecessor, the Air 3, under the microscope in a product test.

Ice cooling meets high light energy

Let's start with the unique selling point of Ulike devices: the sapphire ice cooling. I am already familiar with this from the Ulike Air 3, and it has lived up to its promise there, just as it does with the Ulike Air 10 Pro. Despite the high energy density of the light flashes, the treatment is painless. The sapphire contact surface is cooled to around 15 °C, so the heat of the light is not noticeable on the skin.

Ulike prominently advertises 26 joules of energy. That sounds massive, but it is relative to the area of the light window: at just under 8 joules per square centimeter, the device is only slightly stronger than top models from the competition. Nevertheless, this energy would be painful without the cooling. However, this also poses a risk for the application. Normally, a sudden pain stimulus warns you if you accidentally flash over a tattoo, a mole, or a patch of skin that is too dark. Because the sapphire cooling completely suppresses this pain, you lack this natural warning signal from the skin.

Scan and glide: the new treatment modes

The most important innovation compared to the Air 3 is the optical sensor. It continuously measures your skin pigmentation and automatically adjusts the light intensity. This saves you from having to manually compare it with a color chart, is significantly more accurate, and is gentler on the skin. Here, Ulike is now catching up with the competition.

There is also an innovation in the treatment modes. For sensitive skin areas, you use the gentler levels ("Fast" or "Normal"), while thick hair can handle the "High" setting. For the most stubborn hair, Ulike has integrated the USHR mode (Ulike Strong Hair Removal), in which the device emits its maximum energy. Regardless of these levels, you can choose between two modes: in manual mode, you trigger each light flash individually by pressing a button – this is suitable for small areas like the upper lip. If, on the other hand, you are treating large areas, you can switch to "Auto Glide" mode. You hold the button down and move the device smoothly over the skin while it flashes continuously. This saves time during full-body treatment.

In fact, the application on the legs, for example, is much faster this way than if I had to trigger each flash individually. I finished both legs in a few minutes. This made it easier for me to find time for it regularly.

The Air 10 Pro is somewhat larger and heavier than its predecessor. Personally, I liked the more manageable Air 3 better. And the Air 10 Pro is not exactly quiet either. The permanently running fan for cooling emits an audible hum.

Applying it to round body parts like the knees is a bit tricky, as the completely straight, flat device head does not lie optimally against the skin. In addition, the light pulses shine through strongly at the sides. The included protective goggles are therefore not an optional accessory. Better-fitting attachments would probably mitigate this. However, Ulike dispenses with interchangeable attachments entirely. This has the advantage that you don't have to constantly swap parts or think about which attachment is intended for which zone during the treatment. In general, the operation is pleasantly simple and intuitive. An included quick guide explains everything essential in brief. I also like that I don't have to install an app, but can simply plug in the device and get started immediately.

Already with the Air 3, I regretted being tied to the cable. This is no different with the successor and restricts freedom of movement somewhat. However, the high performance and the cooling function would simply not be possible in battery operation.

Does more mean better?

You are probably already aware that you need perseverance for a lasting result with IPL application. This is because, for biological reasons, the light pulses only work in the active growth phase of the hair. And because we cannot artificially accelerate the hair cycle, one treatment every one to two weeks is actually completely sufficient to hit the active follicles. However, Ulike recommends using the device three to four times a week in the first month.

This is certainly a noticeable time investment and differs from the competition. With models from Philips or Braun, you start directly on a two-week rhythm, as this cycle already optimally covers the biological cycle. So why should you flash so frequently at the beginning with Ulike?

An official explanation is missing, but it is likely due to the handling: anyone who pulls the device over their legs in a few minutes in "Auto Glide" mode will inevitably miss areas of skin. However, if you flash three times a week, you simply hit these forgotten hairs comfortably in the second or third pass.

Since I do not see the biological sense behind this extremely tight-knit application at the beginning, I deliberately did not stick to this requirement in the test and flashed significantly less often. The result: even with my reduced rhythm, I was able to see visible results after four weeks. The high energy therefore seems to be sufficient to treat the hair roots effectively, even if you approach the application rhythm a bit more relaxed and gently on the skin.

The Ulike Air 10 Pro delivers solid results and remains pain-free during use thanks to its effective sapphire ice cooling. Operation (no attachment changes, no app) is refreshingly intuitive. The approach requires a few compromises: The device is necessarily tethered to a cable, and the fan for cooling hums during use. The completely flat treatment head requires some skill on curved body parts. Overall, the Air 10 Pro focuses on the "Auto-Glide" mode and a high application frequency - true to the motto "more is more".
