The latest beauty trend has young men reaching for extra hard chewing gum. Their goal: an angular, defined jawline. However, experts warn against exaggerated expectations and possible risks.
Social media is always good for an absurd trend. The latest hype? Extra-hard chewing gum that is supposed to strengthen the jaw muscles to create a prominent jawline - just like Superman. Young men are particularly keen on this trend. It is part of the "Looksmaxxing" movement, in which young men try to optimise their appearance. On TikTok and YouTube, numerous videos are circulating with alleged before-and-after comparisons that are supposed to demonstrate the success of the method.

Brands such as Jawliner, Stronger Gum and Jawcko have triggered a true chewing revolution in recent years. Their products are advertised as a "facial workout" that supposedly trains over 50 facial and throat muscles. Gen Z in particular loves these chewing gums. But what is really behind these promises?
Dentists and doctors are sceptical. Excessive chewing can lead to jaw pain and even damage to the teeth. In an interview, dentist Dr Donges warns against chewing conventional chewing gum too hard:
There is a risk of joint problems, especially in young people whose jaws are still developing. A high price to pay for a beauty trend at a young age. Especially as the goal of achieving a prominent jawline could turn out to be more difficult than expected.
Because the reality is that you would probably have to chew for many hours a day for a visible effect - and for years. And if things go badly, gum chewers end up with a rather square look instead of a defined jaw. Probably not exactly what most people are aiming for.
