DIY Tuesday: plant yourself a picture

Would you like to bring that garden feeling into your bare four walls, but are too lazy to conscientiously look after your green companions? Then I've got something for you.

It's not easy in Switzerland. Summer must be enjoyed with caution. Always with the fear that every ray of sunshine could be the last and the knowledge that autumn could sneak up on us at any moment. That's why I've made an attempt to retain some of the calming greenery - at home.

You will need:

  • no idea about art
  • No green fingers
  • Flowers, leaves etc. of your choice
  • kitchen paper
  • A few thick tomes
  • Picture frame with transparent back panel

Step 1: Firstly, our subject needs to be pressed and thus made durable. To do this, place the greenery of your choice carefully and flatly draped between four layers of kitchen paper and place the whole thing between the pages of a book.

Step 2: Now carefully close the book. Stack more books on top to increase the weight and pressure. After three weeks, your leaf should have lost all moisture. If you want to press a flower, I would extend the pressing time by two weeks. Changing the kitchen paper can also speed up the process.

Step 3: The picture frames I used can be easily taken apart by carefully pulling the metal frame apart at one of its corners. This reveals the rubber band that holds the frame together. You need to remove this. You can then take apart all four sides of the frame and place the pressed leaf or flower between the Plexiglas panes.

Step 4: Then place all four frame parts back around the Plexiglas panes and put the elastic band back on. This elastic band can also be used to hang your picture frame.

Of course, there are no limits to your imagination. You can display pretty much anything you can flatten.

As a massive Disney fan, I see the world through rose-tinted glasses. I worship series from the 90s and consider mermaids a religion. When I’m not dancing in glitter rain, I’m either hanging out at pyjama parties or sitting at my make-up table. P.S. I love you, bacon, garlic and onions.
