Delicious comeback: the popcorn tops from the 00s are back

A new day, a new 90s or 00s revival. What hasn't already been dug out of the mothballs for a second fashion spring: tight chokers, dangerously low-fitting pants, velo shorts, crop tops, bucket hats, ... I could continue this list endlessly. So endless, in fact, that I was convinced that every fashion phenomenon from back then had been reissued. How naive of me. Because once blinked, the next comeback is already waiting for willing wearers. The latest: popcorn tops. They mean nothing to you? Then you're either too young or you slept through the early 2000s.
Let me paint you a picture. Of delicate, textured tops in bright candy colors that look like they were dabbed onto your body straight from a piping bag. It doesn't just sound delicious, it is. At least visually. The nostalgic snack for the eye is currently on the menu at French designer Marine Serre, among others. For spring/summer '22, she's serving up not only tops but also entire dresses in popcorn style, but in terms of color she's moving far away from the gaudy originals. Up-and-coming designer Chet Lo is quite different. The 25-year-old creative takes the "pop" in popcorn literally, knitting his designs in hot pink or slime green. If you take a look at his Instagram account, you'll be catapulted straight back into the colorful 00s - and discover pictures of Christina Aguilera, Dua Lipa and Kylie Jenner. If you also want to bring more three-dimensionality into your outfits (again), you can currently find it at Stüssy, Jaded Ldn, Weekday or secondhand, for example. The only tip is to let your popcorn top take the spotlight. It may well be combined with other colors, but in terms of pattern and texture it wants to - literally - stand out. So it's best to move harmoniously in the same color family or go for neutral tones that bring even more calm to the cheeky revival.
